NEW: Dear Thinx and PETA: Please Stop Using Rape Culture to Promote Panties and Kittens

Below is an email I sent to Thinx on November 3, 2016, regarding a recent campaign they tried and, thankfully, failed to employ on BART stations. If you are so moved, I hope you will take advantage of the above link to contact them yourself.

I have not written to PETA about its equally offensive adoption campaign because I understand it has received a fair amount of attention around the issue already. Thinx’s latest ad, by contrast, is not nearly as publicized just yet, as far as I’m aware.

When this is no longer new, I will move it to Bonus Chapter and Supplementary Essays.

Hi there,

I have considered buying your panties for some time now, but have recently decided not to buy them unless you halt a specific campaign and publicly apologize for it.

Which campaign, you ask? This one.

It wasn’t cute when PETA did it, and it’s not cute when you do it– no matter how many times you claim to be “feminists.”

grabapussy

Note: Text that appears above the meme is not my own, but I support it 1000%!

To call panties “Pussy-Grab-Proof” implies that it is the job of women to “grab-proof” their genitals, rather than the job of EVERYONE to simply respect one another enough not to go around grabbing other people’s crotches. This does not fall under the umbrella of “reclaiming” a word.

What you’ve done instead is to make light of disgusting comments made by Trump. You claim in the above-linked article that you sought to bring attention to the issue in a positive way, but instead what you are really doing is using Trump’s misogyny to line your own pockets.

Here are some ways you can truly commit to feminism in light of Trump’s comments, though you might not like these ideas because you won’t necessarily earn money from them, only respect:

***Put out a general, non-product-specific ad that reads “Hands off my pussy!” or “No pussy without permission,” etc. That way you get to be scandalous and use a naughty word while accurately reclaiming it for feminist purposes, reasserting that pussy access is to be granted, not grabbed.

***Put out a longer, professional statement on your website about why Trump’s words were so awful, how they are indicative of the pervasiveness of rape culture, and how none of you will vote for him.

***Make a tax-deductible donation to any of myriad organizations out there fighting for women’s rights and helping survivors of rape or molestation heal and move on with their lives.

Thank you for your time.
